There were 1,000 train derailments in 2022, having fallen 50% since 2003 & 80% since 1980. What is the difference in the number of train derailments that occured in 1980 to those of 2003?
With the evidence of progressive indoctrination replacing the 3 Rs in schools it is a good idea to give the above quiz to your children or grandchildren to give you a clue as to what they are learning so you can see if you're satisfied with their schooling. College students or recent graduates included.
I will post all correct answers or alternatively will send the solution privately to anyone who requests it.
Derailments: 1980 10,000
ReplyDelete2003 - 2,000
Ans.
8,000
You are halfway there. Check your equation for 1980 & make sure you are writing it for the appropriate years. The reductions are relative to 2022.
Delete1980 10,000 derailments
Delete2022 1,000 derails
90 % Decrease
There was an 80% reduction from 1980 to 2022 when there were 1,000 train derailments. 10,000 is too high as you point out which comes to a 90% reduction. Try it from this approach. You are looking for the difference in train derailments between 1980 (X) & 2003 (2,000) which you already calculated.
DeleteDoug,
DeleteDerailments in 2022 = 1,000 .2 X = 1,000
Therefore X =5,000 derails in 1980
5,000 - 1,000 = 4,000
4,000/5000 = 80% decrease from 1980 2,022.
Apologize for the delay
Derailments in 1980, 300
ReplyDelete1000 in 2022
1500 in 2003
1800 in 1980
Difference of 300 from 1980 to 2003
You are saying that a 50% reduction from 2003 to 2022 is 500 derailments & an 80% reduction from 1980 to 2022 is 800. To go from 1500 to 1000 is a 33.3% reduction (1500 - 1000)/1500 = 33.3% & to go from 1800 to 1000 is a 44.4% reduction (1800-1000)/1800 = 44.4%. Work the arithmetic again. You are looking for the difference as you mention but it is more than 300.
DeleteDoug, the difference in no. of derailments that occurred in 1980 and those in 2003 is 300.
ReplyDeleteHow many derailments were there in 1980 & 2003? You are either off by a decimal point or misread the problem.
DeleteHi Doug - I worked the quiz mentally and in a hurry. As you stated, I was off by a decimal point. The numbers are 2000 and 5000. The answer is 3000.
Delete5000 in 1980 , 2000 in 2003. So a difference of 3000.
ReplyDeleteHowK's was really the first received. I held it until I thought all others were in. He never misses does he?
