This quiz will be of interest to all the investors in the readership of which there are many - but especially to young investors who should take note.
In 1999 Jim Glassman & Kevin Hassett predicted the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) would hit 36,000 - they just didn't clearly say when. On Tuesday November 2, 2021 the DJIA closed @ 36,053. See graph below for the trajectory.
Mr Glassman recently pointed out that the DJIA went from 826 on November 2, 1971 to 36,053 exactly 50 years later. He also mused about what level the stock index would reach 50 years from now.
DJIA Quiz
Assuming the same rate of return actually achieved for the 50 years indicated above, what level would the DJIA reach on November 2, 2071? What is that rate of return?
I will post all correct answers or alternatively will send my solution privately to anyone who requests it.
Just for the fun of it - guesses are acceptable for this one.
Just a simple guess 45,795.
ReplyDeleteHi Doug, Happy and healthy new year to you and yours as well.
ReplyDeleteNot sure I calculated this one correctly but I am coming up with something in the neighborhood of 1, 537,000. I just used the formula for calculating ROR and that's what I came up with. Not even sure my formulas is correct, I think it is current value minus beginning value divided by beginning value times 100???
Bullseye.
DeleteForgot to include the ROR - It's about 7.8%.
DeleteRight again.
DeleteSorry nothing to invest!
ReplyDeleteHi Doug - Annual Rate of Return (to 2nd decimal) 7.58%
ReplyDeleteFuture Value of 36,053 in 50 years? 1,576,669.78
Cheers.
Dear RTE - I really didn't know how to solve this quiz problem. It seemed to me that you needed to find the percent increase from 826 to 36,053. I divided 826 into 36,053 and got 43.6, but I didn't know what to do with this number because a 43.6 percent increase of 826 surely isn't going to get you to 36,053. With help from a math guy, I realized that I needed to multiply 36,053 X 43.6 and got 1,571,910.8 which is the approximate value the DJIA would reach on 11/2/2071.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a clue how to figure the rate of return.
