About Me

In writing the "About Me" portion of this blog I thought about the purpose of the blog - namely, preventing the growth of Socialism & stopping the Death Of Democracy in the American Republic & returning her to the "liberty to abundance" stage of our history. One word descriptions of people's philosophies or purposes are quite often inadequate. I feel that I am "liberal" meaning that I am broad minded, independent, generous, hospitable, & magnanimous. Under these terms "liberal" is a perfectly good word that has been corrupted over the years to mean the person is a left-winger or as Mark Levin more accurately wrote in his book "Liberty & Tyranny" a "statist" - someone looking for government or state control of society. I am certainly not that & have dedicated the blog to fighting this. I believe that I find what I am when I consider whether or not I am a "conservative" & specifically when I ask what is it that I am trying to conserve? It is the libertarian principles that America was founded upon & originally followed. That is the Return To Excellence that this blog is named for & is all about.

Covid-19 Quiz

Below is the subject quiz that shows the importance of protecting the elderly from contracting Covid-19. 
 
Please let me know how you work the problem.  I will post all correct answers or alternatively will send the solution privately to anyone who requests it if no one gets it right.

Through May 27 it has been estimated that upward of 50% of deaths due to Covid-19 have been people in nursing homes.  Another 30% have been people over 65 not in nursing homes & the other 20% is everyone else.  Source – John Delaney.
 
1)  Given the population in the U.S. of 331,100,000 & the confirmed death rate for the U.S. shown on the graphic below how many people over 65 not living in nursing homes died by May 27 due to Covid-19? 
 
2)  What is the % of total deaths due to Covid-19 in the U.S. population as of May 27?

    For the first question I am coming up with about 29,750. I am not sure what the 2nd question is, just not reading it right. If you mean of the 4 countries listed what is the US percent i think it is about 14%

      You got question #1 right on the nose. It is the second part you can do in your head. The graphic provides all the info you need. Let me know if you need more of a hint.

    Doug, it's a toughie.

    Total deaths due to Covid 19 through May 27 is,
    331,100,000 X .229 = 7,582,190

    75,682,190 X .3 = 2,274,657

    % of deaths due to Covid 19 as of May 27 = from graph or 7,582,190 /331,100,000 = 0.229

      Please check your numbers. The quiz is based on real numbers in May & the U.S. has only had 150,000 total deaths through July so we know it is quite a bit less two months ago – not 7 million or 75 million. The .229 appears to be a misprint also plus you give two different numbers of 7,582,190 (the 7 million number) & transpose it to 75,682,190 (the 75 million number) on the next line. I think your reasoning is in the right direction but the arithmetic is suspect. Update it & you should have it.

      Doug. below is my revised solution to the quiz.

      cumulative deaths due to Covid 19 through May 27 = 331,100,000 X .80/100,000 = 264,880
      For Question 1, answer is 264880 x .30 = 79464 deaths

      & for Question 2, % of total deaths due to Covid 19 as of May 27 = 264880/331100000 = 0.008
