About Me

In writing the "About Me" portion of this blog I thought about the purpose of the blog - namely, preventing the growth of Socialism & stopping the Death Of Democracy in the American Republic & returning her to the "liberty to abundance" stage of our history. One word descriptions of people's philosophies or purposes are quite often inadequate. I feel that I am "liberal" meaning that I am broad minded, independent, generous, hospitable, & magnanimous. Under these terms "liberal" is a perfectly good word that has been corrupted over the years to mean the person is a left-winger or as Mark Levin more accurately wrote in his book "Liberty & Tyranny" a "statist" - someone looking for government or state control of society. I am certainly not that & have dedicated the blog to fighting this. I believe that I find what I am when I consider whether or not I am a "conservative" & specifically when I ask what is it that I am trying to conserve? It is the libertarian principles that America was founded upon & originally followed. That is the Return To Excellence that this blog is named for & is all about.

Magical Math Trick Quiz

Thanks to a long time subscriber to RTE who specializes in these types of messages for sending the subject math trick below that is able to hone in & discover your all-time favorite movie based on a few simple mathematical principles.  Please let me know which movie it determined for you & if indeed it is your favorite.  Please do not look @ the list of movies before doing the math.

The determination of the movie was easy – the quiz is to explain how the math trick worked.  I will post all correct answers & send the solution to anyone who requests it if no one figures it out.

DO YOUR math, write the numbers down, then compare the results to the list of movies at the bottom.

You will be AMAZED at how true and accurate this test is.

1. Pick a number from 1-9.

2. Multiply that number by 3.

3. Add 3.

4. Multiply by 3 again.

5. Your total will be a two digit number.

Add the first and second digits together to find your favorite movie in the list of 17 movies below:

  2. Essentially what you are doing is multiplying a given number by 9. Adding the three just guarantees a two digit answer, in case your original number was 1. All numbers multiplied by 9 have results that equal 9 when added. 2×9 is 18 three is 27, 36, 45. 54, 63, 72, 81.
My favorite movie of all times is Blazing Saddles, for the record...

  7. That will be my favorite movie when it comes out. It's a simple trick. No matter what number you start with, the answer will always be #9.

  8. Doug - I feel I am missing something, but here we go. The quiz could be about anything, and the answer will always be the ninth on the list. Eliminating the window dressing, the math within the quiz works out to 9x+9, or 9(x+1). The answer has to be a multiple of 9. As you have defined the the set of possible numbers we can select as being 1 through 9, those numbers will work out to possible solutions in our equation with values of 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, and 90. Our possible solutions first digit runs from 1 up to 9, and our possible solutions second digit rises from 0 to 8. However, all multiples of 9 will not add up to 9. The set was defined, however. Selecting numbers from 10 and above will not add up to 9 or be a two digit number. Zero would also give us The Obama Farewell Speech, but would not give you a two digit number total as stated in the problem.

Whatever I'm getting or missing, it was fun.

    Take care.
