Ever since the State of the Union address in January BO has been antagonizing women by saying they "still make 77 cents for every dollar a man earns." He wasn't counting on anyone checking his own payment record @ the White House as shown in the top left graph.
BO's latest attempt to stir up trouble concerning his so-called gender wage gap backfired when it was revealed that median annual salaries for women working in BO's White House were 88% of the salaries BO paid to men.
Now the 77 cents on the dollar figure happens to be true if you take it literally. The figure comes from the U.S. Census Bureau which estimated that the 2012 median earnings for women were 77% of the median earnings for men. The top right graph gives some reasons why this is true.
In brief, BO's 77 cent figure only addresses one specific point – annual earnings for all women versus annual wages for all men. It does not address what women make compared to men when they do the same job – like being iron workers, truck drivers, or nuclear engineers.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics calculates the figure to be 81 cents to the dollar – pretty good agreement so we can't quarrel with the figure – just the way it is being used by BO.
Mark Perry & Andrew Biggs, writing in the WSJ, point out the question BO raises "is very different than saying that women earned 81% of what men earned for doing the same jobs, while working the same hours, with the same level of risk, with the same educational background & the same years of continuous, uninterrupted work experience, & assuming no gender differences in family roles like child care."
The main way you know BO's contention is wrong is because with all the alleged Benedict Arnold CEOs in America who outsource jobs to third world countries @ the drop of a hat why in the world wouldn't these same CEOs hire women @ a 23% discount if they did the same job as men?
Also unmentioned by BO is a 2013 Pew Research Center study that found "among married couples with children, the proportion in which the wife's income tops her husband's has increased from about 4% in 1960 to 23% in 2011." This trend does not fit the destructive class warfare & envy mold BO constantly promotes.
The sooner women & the minorities BO panders to & purposely misleads realize they are being exploited, used as pawns, & played as fools the better it will be for them & America.
There are so many good points made in this posting. I just wish the minorities that BO panders to would just consider your 3rd last paragraph in which you wonder why CEO'S don't hire women if they work for 23% less than men? It is so difficult to get these people into the arena of ideas and until they do get into the arena of ideas, America will remain on a collision course with a total socialist society.
ReplyDeleteTerrific post but I was wondering if you could write a little more on this subject? I'd be very thankful if you could elaborate a little bit
