The Imperial Federal Government is now poised to take over 18% of our economy. Yes … we still have private insurance companies in the mix, but the Democrats and Obama have targeted these companies for destruction. The final goal is something Democrats call "single payer." That's just a less-threatening way of saying "government controlled." The aim here is to make that single payer the federal government. Can you just imagine what your medical care picture will look like when the government decides what gets paid for and how much gets paid? Lovely, just lovely. This will not matter, though, to people who just want to shed themselves of the responsibility for caring for their own health when things head south.
OK … How did we get here? I've created this nifty little timeline. Not specific dates, just a general sequence of events on the road to government-run healthcare.
-
The Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor. (Yes, we're going that far back. Must be thorough.) As an aside, we still call this the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, but we can't say the Muslim attack on The World Trade Center.
-
The United States declares war on Japan on December 8, 1941. Three days later we declare war on Germany.
-
Under an austerity program mandated by the federal government, private sector employers are largely restricted for raising wages and salaries.
-
Employers, looking for ways to attract and to keep employees, start offering various benefits as compensation to employees rather than increased wages. One of those benefits was health insurance.
-
As health insurance policies – fully and partially paid for – become part of employee compensation packages, the American worker starts to accept the concept that their health care is the responsibility of their employer.
-
Health insurance policies gradually morph into health care payment plans. No longer do people expect their insurance policies to cover only unexpected losses or expenses, as is the case with automobile insurance. Now health insurance policies are expected to pay virtually all health care costs once a small deductible is taken care of. Costs rise.
-
As health care consumers are taken out of the equation – meaning that they are now only worried about coverage, not cost – health care costs increase even more.
-
In the meantime, politicians realize that a new dependency has emerged. Not only are people dependent on government for their retirement income – Social Security – they are now dependent on someone else for health care. Democrat politicians realize that if this dependency can be shifted to the federal government it will increase the power that politicians have over their constituents. Thus begins the move toward government-controlled health care. Democrats dream of the day they can develop campaign ads which say "If you vote for the Republican, they're going to take away your health care."
-
The first serious push for government-controlled health care comes with the election of Bill Clinton. Suddenly the American people are staring down a monstrosity known as HillaryCare. Under this plan a private patient could actually be sent to jail if they dared contract with a doctor outside of the government scheme for health care. The doctor would be their cellmate. The American people rejected the plan outright, and the very next year the Democrats lost control of the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.
-
After the voter revolution of 1994 the Democrats vowed that if they ever gained complete control of the government apparatus in Washington they would move immediately to increase voter dependency through government health care. This time, though, they would tread a bit more lightly. Perhaps the idea of preventing private relationships with doctors could wait a few years.
-
Democrats find themselves in control of Government in Washington again in 2009. The dreams of that "If you vote for the Republicans they're going to take away your health care" campaign ad can now become a reality. ObamaCare is pushed through the congress without ONE SINGLE Republican vote. This happens after the voters send a message of disapproval by electing a Republican Senator in Massachusetts on the strength of his promise to vote AGAINST ObamaCare. In a move no citizen actually understands, the Democrats then demonstrate their determination to control health care by enacting the law without a Senate vote.
-
Obama promises – promises on all that his holy to him – that the penalty for refusal to buy an insurance policy under ObamaCare is NOT a tax.
-
Obama then argues before the Supreme Court that the penalty is just fine because it actually IS a tax.
-
The Supreme Court rules that the mandate is constitutional because it is actually a tax …. Democrats cheer …. Parasites cheer …. And much of America finally realizes that the Imperial Federal Government of the United States has finally become the omnipotent monster our Founding Fathers feared and tried so hard to prevent.
Doug - great chronology. It depicts a steadily growing mindset of Americans abdicating personal responsibility and embracing entitlements. just as one event (pearl harbor attack) lead to chain of events to current entitlement dependency mindset, I truly hope for another new event that will lead to a rapid reversal of this mindset. This event may occur very soon (ex months): the collapse of European style entitlements due to Euro zone bankruptcies and creditor imposition of austerity. When this happens let's hope Americans will view that as a harbinger of what lies ahead for the U.S.
